Energy & Protection
Protect Your Energy Before a Difficult Conversation

You cannot control how another person arrives, but you can decide how you will stay connected to yourself before the conversation begins.
When you expect conflict, your body may begin the conversation hours before it happens. You rehearse arguments, imagine the other person’s reaction and spend energy defending yourself against words that have not yet been spoken.
Choose one intention
Decide what you need the conversation to accomplish. Perhaps you need to state a boundary, ask one direct question or communicate a decision. A clear intention prevents you from being pulled into every old disagreement.
Place a hand over your chest and imagine a calm boundary around you—not a wall, but a filter. Respect and useful information can enter. Pressure, blame and emotional bait do not have to become yours.
Prepare the sentence you need
Write one line you can return to: ‘I am willing to discuss this, but not while being insulted,’ or ‘I need a clear answer about what happens next.’ Repetition is not failure when the other person keeps changing the subject.
Decide beforehand what will make you pause or end the exchange. Protection is stronger when it has an action attached to it. Leaving a circular conversation can be more powerful than winning one more point.
Afterward, release the need to grade your performance immediately. You can speak calmly and still feel shaken. Protecting your energy means remaining loyal to your truth, not becoming emotionless.
